For our second day in Copenhagen, we decided to visit the Tivoli amusement park, which was reputedly the inspiration for Walt Disney. We arrived slightly prior to it opening for the day, so we wandered around in search for warmth and a snack. Of course we initially headed in the complete opposite direction to where all the cafes were, but eventually found a nice hot drink and a pastry before entering the park.
The Tivoli had a fairy-tale ambiance to it, enhanced by the snow and Christmas lights. It was a little shame it was so bitterly cold as most of the larger rides were closed because of it and we spent a lot of the time looking to where we could find the next bit of warmth. Still it was lovely to walk round, everywhere we looked there was food, and found the aquarium to be quite entertaining.
It was getting dark again by the time we left the Tivoli. As we exited there was a large ferris wheel across the road labeled the ‘Wheel of Excellence’. We decided to try it out and got a good five minutes of great views over the city. We again ended the day making our way back to the hotel via the Stroget.
The morning was even colder than the previous days. We were walking along the sea front, with more sleet than snow being blasted into our faces as we went. Perhaps we should have taken some shelter from the harsh weather, but I was determined not to miss out on the last major site of Copenhagen, the ‘Little Mermaid’. We passed a statue of Michelangelo’s David, looking a little lost in the snow, and walked along the Kastellet, fort surrounded by a frozen over pentagon shaped moat. When we finally got there, it was a little
smaller than I had imagined and seemed to be having a face-off with an ice penguin, we took our pictures and, leaving the two at it, briskly made our way further inland.
We thought a nice warm museum might be a good choice to bide our time until our flight out, so we headed for the Guiness World Records museum. This turned out to be quite entertaining with lots of interactive exibits and interesting facts demonstrated by life sized replicas in many cases. By the time we finished it was time to collect our things and head for the airport.
