Our first night at sea was not quite as peaceful as I would have hoped. The engines made quite a bit of noise as they started up in the early hours of the morning, and the rocking motion took a while to get use to. But in all I didn’t have too bad a night’s sleep.
Upon waking that morning I was eager to find out where we were. We washed, got dressed and made our way to the outside deck only to find all we could see was sea, the ship wasn’t due into port for a couple of hours yet. Still excited about the day ahead, we went to get some breakfast and waited until land was sighted.
For the day’s activities we had signed up for a tour of the various beaches Milos is famous for, but this was not due to start for an hour or so after arriving into port, so we started the day off with a brief walk around the small town, taking in the marvellous white buildings.
The tour began heading via coach to Tsigrado beach. There were some fantastic views as we walked down to the beach. The cliffs ranged in colour from white through to red, and once we reached the clear blue waters, we noticed a huge rock formation jutting out of the sea. We caught some rays and swam for a while until it was time to make our way back up to the waiting coach for our next stop on the tour.
About midday, the coach headed to the second stop, Paleochori beach. Here lunch had been arranged at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the beach. Food was quite good, and again the views were excellent. Afterwards we got a free cocktail at the bar and just about enough time to sit and enjoy it before the coach was due to move on again. A slight shame we didn’t get any time to explore the beach properly, but the day was getting on and we still had one more beach to reach.
The third and final beach on our tour was Sarakiniko beach. I use the term ‘beach’ loosely, as this was more like a pure white lunar landscape. Not much sand to be seen here, the whole place was covered with bright white rock, a very peculiar sight indeed.
As we explored round intriguing rock formations, we came across a series of man made caves carved into the cliff face. However after going a short distance into one entrance, we decided not to proceed further due to the smell emanating from within, and the lack of any light source to ensure we weren’t stepping in something we would regret later.
That concluded our tour of the beaches of Milos, and after returning to the ship and a nice refreshing shower, we headed back out for an evening meal in one of the many restaurants along the water’s edge.
